What kind of handhelds do you need? Here are the recommended handheld models from TrackAbout.

MC3000	MC 3000 User Guide	MC3090 Wireless: This handheld can only talk to the server by being syncronized in a docking station. This is recommended for drivers if you will not be doing any mobile printing.
MC3090	MC 3090 User Guide	MC3090 Wireless + Bluetooth:Bluetooth is recommended for any worker who might do mobile printing at some point. So a good question is whether or not you see your drivers doing paperless deliveries with printing receipts at customer sites some day. If so then you should consider the bluetooth handhelds. This handheld can talk through a regular wifi network. This is the same kind of network that is used to connect laptops to the internet from airports and offices. This handheld is recommended for plant and dock handhelds. This wifi connection allows real-time inventory control and the handhelds can get wireless alerts and do other more interactive data transfer. This device supports SD memory cards

MC65	MC 65 Info	The MC65 Supports MicroSD or MicroSDHC cards up to 32GB in size. TrackAbout recommends MicroSDHC Class 10 cards for the fastest speeds. Any size is fine. The cheaper 8GB cards will be plenty of space.
MC70	MC 70 Users Guide	MC70 Wireless + Bluetooth + Cellular: Cellular allows real-time communication with driver handhelds in the field. We do not have any customers that have gone with this option. The MC70s are also a different form factor which I think is not quite as good for heavy scanning as the MC30XX series of handhelds. Also with the advent of "MiFi" (wireless routers from Verizon and Sprint that are on the cellular network but support a local wifi network) you could put one of these MiFi devices in the truck and give the drivers real-time communication near the truck with a wifi device rather than a cellular device. This device supports SD memory cards

Rugged Device Specifications

Specification	Definition	Recommendation
Ingress Protection Rating	This evaluates how well a device stands up to environmental factors. Higher numbers designate greater protection. The first number refers to solids, the second number refers to liquids.	IP54 at a minimum. IP64 is better.
Intrinsic Safety (I-Safe)	An intrinsically safe device will not ignite combustibles.	Intrinsic Safety ratings should be evaluated for devices used in hazardous environments. Certifications correspond to the hazardous environments for which a device is recommended for use.
MIL-STD	US Military reliability testing standard which ensures that a device will perform in extreme weather conditions and withstand occasional shocks (drops).	810-G
Drop Spec	This is a measurement of how far a device has been dropped and continued to perform. The test can vary from one manufacturer to another.	The MIL-STD 810-G standard requires 26 drops from 1.2 m (4 ft) onto plywood.

TrackAbout has a repair program for Symbol Palm Terminals. In association with Legacy, a company founded by ex-Symbol repair specialists, a preferred-customer repair program has been developed for TrackAbout customers.

intrinsically Safe Alternatives to Palm

Mobile Units including the Motorola MC 65, MC 75, MC 9500, and MC 9000 all meet or exceed Palm Device intrinsically safe rating which is Class 1 Division 2.
Class
Class l Areas in which flammable gases or vapors may be present in sufficient quantities to be explosive or ignitable.
Class ll Areas made hazardous by the presence of combustible dust.
Class lll Areas in which there are easily ignitable fibers or flyings present, due to the type of material being handled, stored or processed-but in which such fibers or flyings are not likely to be in suspension in the air in quantities sufficient to produce ignitable mixtures.
Divisions
Division 1 - Normal Situation: A hazard is present in the everyday normal production operation or during frequent repair and/or maintenance activity.
Division 2 - Abnormal Situation: Potentially hazardous material is expected to be safely confined within closed containers or closed systems, and will be present in the atmosphere only through accidental rupture, breakage, or abnormal operation.
Groups
Group A, B, C & D Gases and vapors in Class l locations are classified into four groups, by the code A, B, C, and D. These materials are grouped according to the ignition temperature of the substance, its explosion pressure and other flammability characteristics.
Groups E, F & G Combustible dust in Class ll locations are classified according to ignition temperature and t he conductivity of the hazardous substance.
